Artist's Statement

I make all my images in nature with available natural light.  I use 4x5, 6x7, and 35mm manual cameras, a large selection of lenses, Fujichrome transparency film, and Fujichrome papers.  Much of my work uses the optical properties of water, in all its natural forms, as an important photographic and compositional element.  Examples are: refracted images in dew and rain drops; reflections in ponds and streams; distortions of curved water surfaces; filtering effects of ice, rain, and fog; and the blurring effects of moving water

Each image is the result of what I call layers of vision.  I search for subjects with a naturalist’s eyes; edit and compose with an artist’s vision and sense of esthetics; and make photographic choices and handle the equipment with a photographer’s knowledge of how the world is communicated through lenses and film.  My goal is to convey the beauty and wonder of nature through images which tell a story, elicit a question, or give a new perspective on the familiar.

These images are the visual highlights of my experiences in wild places.  Please enjoy.
