Drop Refractions / Water of Life Uluhe fern refracted in a rain drop. Volcanoes national park, Hawaii |

In a fine, misty rain I hiked along on a trail in the rainforest below the rim of the Kilauea Crater in Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii. In the forest it was fairly calm so I began scanning the vegetation for interesting water drop images. I found a fern in the process of uncurling its leaflets. The rough texture of the underside helped make the rain drops nearly spherical, creating a near perfect optical lens which formed images of the rest of the fern in the background. Each drop contains an image of the same fern behind the drop (although each image is slightly different depending on the size and shape of the drop). As in my other rain or dew drop photographs, the image in the drop is naturally inverted. Water of Life is somewhat unique because it looks like the fern images are right side up. However, this is an Uluhe Fern, a native plant of Hawaii, which grows more like a shrub or vine, and many of its fronds, like those in the drops, actually hang down. |
