Maple leaf caught on a rock, Little River, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee

In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, on the Tennessee side, the Little River winds like a snake through a steep gorge.  As I descended the gorge, I stopped at each bend, where the river was in shade but trees on the opposite bank were in sunlight, to look for autumn reflections.  The leaf in this image was making a similar journey down the river, stopping here as it was caught on the rounded lip of a boulder.  The texture in the image comes from the smooth rock just a few inches under flowing water.  As the water flows over the rock the angle of its surface changes so that the upper right half is reflecting the yellows (and some red on the left) of autumn trees, while the lower left half is reflecting the blue sky.  After making this image, I continued on down the river.  Sometime later, the leaf would give up its purchase and continue its own journey.
