Genessee Autumn Light Fall colors reflected on the Genessee River. Letchworth State Park, New York |

In Letchworth State Park, in western New York, there is an amazing gorge, often called the Grand Canyon of the East, with several impressive waterfalls along the Genesee River. Like all the tourists there, I wanted to see the big 107-foot Middle Falls. But after much scouting, I could not find an angle that pleased me. Every time I framed it, the composition just said “big waterfall”. Still impressive in reality, but a worn out cliché in a photograph. I walked upriver and searched for inspiration. I found it in a 5-inch limestone ledge that snaked is way across the river bed creating a mini waterfall. It provided a compositional element for the real subject: the reflection of sunlit autumn trees in moving water. I still don’t have a picture of the Middle Falls. |
