Clouds reflected on the ocean swell, Fernandina, Galapagos Islands |

The Galapagos Islands straddle the equator some 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. From Charles Darwin to modern eco-travelers, they have delighted visitors with their strange and fearless wildlife. On my second visit, this time as a photography/natural history tour leader, I spent one morning on Fernandina Island among a throng of Marine Iguanas, with Flightless Cormorants and Sally Lightfoot Crabs nearby. During the midday break out on the boat, while crossing over to Isabela Island, the wind died. The larger waves continued rolling along but soon all the wavelets and smaller agitations ceased so that the ocean’s surface was undulating but glassy smooth, like a funhouse mirror. The reflections of clouds changed constantly like dancing amoebas. The image here is a moment of that dance. The song rings true: “...it’s life’s illusions I recall, I really don’t know clouds, at all.” |
